Eisenglass (Mica)

Eisenglass (Mica)

Mica has a high dielectric strength and excellent chemical stability, making it a favoured material for manufacturing capacitors for radio frequency applications. It has also been used as an insulator in high voltage electrical equipment. It is also birefringent and is commonly used to make quarter and half wave plates.

Because mica is resistant to heat it is used instead of glass in windows for stoves and kerosene heaters. It is also used to separate electrical conductors in cables that are designed to have a fire-resistance rating in order to provide circuit integrity. The idea is to keep the metal conductors from fusing in order to prevent a short-circuit so that the cables remain operational during a fire, which can be important for applications such as emergency lighting.

Illites or clay micas have a low cation exchange capacity for 2:1 clays. K+ ions between layers of mica prevent swelling by blocking water molecules.

Aventurine is a variety of quartz with mica inclusions used as a gemstone.

Pressed Mica sheets are often used in place of glass in greenhouses.

Muscovite mica is the most common substrate for sample preparation for the atomic force microscope.

Some brands of toothpaste include powdered white mica. This acts as a mild abrasive to aid polishing of the tooth surface, and also adds a cosmetically-pleasing glittery shimmer to the paste.

Mica sheets are used to provide structure for heating wire (like Kanthal, Nichrome, etc..) in heating elements and can withstand up to 900 °C. [2] [3] [4]

The Catlow in 1930

The Catlow in 1930

In the mid-1920's, the Catlow Theater was merely a dream for Wright Catlow. Catlow was a Barrington businessman. His father owned the building that served as the village community center.

The Auditorium, as it was called, was used for dances, meetings and community events. It was also used as the showplace for the silent films of that era.

The community center eventually became inadequate for the areas growing film audience.

Catlow started building the new theater on West Main Street in 1926. The theater was primarily designed in the Tudor Revival style ornamented to portray a medieval English hall.

The architectural firm of Betts & Holcomb of Chicago designed the theater and the builder was T.S. Willis of Janesville, Wisconsin.

The theaters grand opening was held on Wright's birthday, May 28th, in 1927.

The main historical highlight of the Catlow Theater is the interior design by renowned sculptor & designer, Alfonso Iannelli.

Iannelli's career started to gain momentum in Los Angeles where he designed posters for the Orpheum Vaudeville Theatre from 1910 to 1915. He also designed their stained glass windows.

During that time, he became friends with architect Barry Byrne and brothers, John & Lloyd Wright, the sons of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Over the years, Iannelli collaborated with John, Wright and, more often, Barry Byrne on many home and church designs. They remained lifelong friends.

Byrne described his collaboration with Iannelli as being "like dancing, with the lead shifting back and forth depending on the specific need."

Frank Lloyd Wright invited Iannelli to come to Chicago from California and work with him on the Midway Gardens complex in 1914. During that collaboration, he designed several of the interior fountains, sculptures and murals as well as most of the famous Sprite sculptures.

Iannelli later worked on many of the exposition pavillions at the Century of Progress for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. He designed the five sculptured reliefs for the Radio Entrance to the Social Sciences Building, the gigantic fair exhibit "Coaster Boy" for legendary Chicago wagon company, Radio Flyer, and the Havoline thermometer exhibit, which was on record as the world's largest thermometer for many years.

His design work was not limited to architectural collaboration. Iannelli, together with his wife Margaret, an artist in her own right, set up Iannelli Studios in Park Ridge.

Along with his poster work, he designed ads, magazine covers, packaging and he was deeply involved in industrial design including fountain pens, lamps and appliances, including the extremely popular Coffeemaster and matching toaster for Sunbeam Electric Co. in 1939.

Other notable works by Iannelli include the twelve bronze constellation placques at the Adler Planetarium; the Rock Of Gibraltar relief for the Prudential Building; the Kenna House apartments and Imaculatta High school, all located in Chicago.

Many of Iannelli's sculptures and designs have been on display at the Art Institute of Chicago where he served as an instructor and was Head of the Design Department for a time. His work was not limited to the Chicago area alone.

Iannelli's work can be found in many states throughout the U.S. and his collaborations with Byrne extended into Europe.

Iannelli's Catlow design includes the stenciling on the Catlow's ceiling, walls and beams along with the sculpted gargoyle-like heads that border each ceiling truss and the "Fountain Idyll" sculpture in the inner lobby.

Other highlights include three coat-of-arms wall murals, iron wall sconces, the detailed woodwork on both of the organ lofts and the original hand painted stage curtain.

Another fine example of his craftsmanship can be seen at the Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge, Illinois (Iannelli's hometown from 1915 until his death in 1965.)

The blueprints for the Catlow Theater had been the original Pickwick Theater plans. The Pickwick owner decided on a different style and Wright Catlow acquired those plans.

Architects Betts & Holcomb also designed a few other theaters in Illinois including the Des Plaines Theater in Des Plaines and the Deerpath Theater in Lake Forest.

The Deerpath and the Catlow were somewhat similar in their architectural floorplans - the significant difference being the Catlow's lack of a balcony.

The Deerpath's mediteranean-style interior design motif was quite different from the Catlow's design. Iannelli was not involved with the Deerpath's interior design in any way.

The Deerpath closed its doors as a movie theater operation in the early 1980's. Its interior was initially tranformed into an office mall but has since been converted into a small shopping mall.

In May of 1927, the Catlow Theater opened for business with "Slide, Kelly, Slide" as its first feature film. In those early days, Wright Catlow was also running vaudeville acts on Sunday nights.

He had work

Food Packaging Science and Technology (Packaging and Converting Technology)

With a wealth of illustrations, examples, discussion questions, and case studies, the Food Packaging Science and Technology covers basic principles and technologies as well as advanced topics such as active, intelligent, and sustainable packaging with unparalleled depth and breadth of scope. Emphasizing the application of relevant scientific principles to create effective designs and quality products, an international team of contributors draws on their collective experience to equip you with the necessary knowledge and tools to tackle modern food packaging problems.
Divided into four parts, this book begins with an extensive discussion of packaging materials science. Contributions review the basic concepts of chemical and physical properties as they relate to food packaging. They cover gas permeation and migration and give detailed information on the four basic types of packaging materials: plastics, glass, metal, and cellulosic. The second part applies the previous information to the field of packaging technologies. Traditional methods and concepts such as end-of-line operations, permeation and migration, canning and aseptic packaging, and vacuum/modified atmosphere packaging are juxtaposed with the more advanced technologies of microwaveable packaging, active packaging, and intelligent packaging.
Part 3 discusses shelf life determination and elements of storage stability and packaging requirements of various food categories. The final part presents issues related to packaging sociology, addressing sustainable packaging, as well as sociological and legislative considerations.

Quick Action Saves Daman Farms

Quick Action Saves Daman Farms

On February 15, 2010, the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) received an urgent request from the World Food Program to help the people of Daman District repair their canals that had recently been damaged by severe flooding. If not repaired within three weeks, all of the year’s crops would be lost, risking serious economic instability. USAID’s Food Insecurity Response for Urban Populations (FIRUP) program stepped in to help, quickly mobilizing 6,600 laborers, and 15 excavators to clear hundreds of kilometers of critical canals. The rapid response saved Daman District’s crops and the livelihoods of many of its local citizens.
With a largely rural population of 90,000 people, most of Daman’s men work in the agriculture sector. According to local farmers, the canal left unrepaired would result in a lack of irrigation forcing them to grow poppy to support their families. In response, the Kandahar PRT organized a shura with the Daman District leader and district elders, led by Kandahar Provincial Governor Tooryalai Wesa, in order to develop an emergency plan.
The emergency program repaired 320 kilometers of critical irrigation canals in just 16 days. When insurgents attempted to interfere with the project, local elders successfully resisted them. The repairs successfully spared any damage to Daman District’s crops.
In addition to saving the district’s farms, the activity provided short-term employment opportunities, while making cash available to purchase necessary agricultural supplies such as seeds and farming equipment. The project reinvigorated the local economy to ensure a plentiful harvest this growing season, and paved the way for future rehabilitation work to ensure the sustainability of the district’s irrigation network.
USAID’s FIRUP program promotes stability through temporary employment and income generation opportunities in targeted populations to reduce the number of food-insecure and/or unemployed Afghans joining the insurgency.

1959 Cockshutt 560 Diesel

1959 Cockshutt 560 Diesel

From Wikipedia: Cockshutt was a large tractor and machinery manufacturer based in Brantford, Ontario. Originally founded as the Brantford Plow Works by James G. Cockshutt in 1877, the name was changed to the Cockshutt Plow Company when it was incorporated in 1882. After James died his brother William Foster Cockshutt took over as president. He remained until 1888, when another brother Frank Cockshutt became president of the company. In 1910, Henry Cockshutt took over the leadership of the company. Under his direction, the company was able to obtain financing for acquisitions and expansion. Known for quality designs, the company became the leader in the tillage tools sector by the 1920s.

Since Cockshutt did not have a tractor design of its own in 1929 an arrangement was made to distribute Allis-Chalmers model 20-35 and United tractors. In 1935 Cockshutt took on the Oliver tractor line. During the war years, Cockshutt was able to design its own tractor. It was the Cockshutt 30 tractor and was the first modern production tractor built in Canada. After the model 30, Cockshutt added the smaller model 20, and the larger 40 and 50.

In 1958, Cockshutt introduced a complete new line of tractors at the same time: the 540, 550, 560, and 570. The sheet metal of the 500 series was designed by Raymond Loewy, an automobile designer of the era. The design set a new standard in modern styling.

Also in 1958, the company was taken over by outside interests and the farm equipment division was sold to White Motor Company in 1962. White had previously acquired Oliver in 1960 and subsequently bought Minneapolis-Moline in 1963.

Starting in 1962, White opted to rebrand the Oliver tractors as Cockshutts. Thus, a Cockshutt 1650 was the same tractor as the Oliver 1650, but painted red instead of green.
